What Is a Call to Action (CTA)?

A call to action tells your audience what to do next: book, buy, call, visit, or follow the link.

A call to action (CTA) is a specific instruction that tells your audience what to do next. “Book a table,” “DM us for pricing,” “Link in bio,” and “Call to schedule” are all CTAs. Without one, a viewer sees your post, thinks “nice,” and keeps scrolling.

For local businesses on Instagram, the most effective CTAs are direct and low-friction. “DM us to book” works better than “Visit our website to learn more about our services and schedule a consultation.” Fewer words, fewer steps.

Every Instagram post should have a CTA in the caption, even review posts. After sharing a 5-star review, a simple “Book your table — link in bio” gives the impressed reader a next step. Without it, the positive feeling from reading the review fades and they move on.

Match the CTA to the content. A food photo: “Come try it this weekend.” A review post: “Your next haircut is one DM away.” A tip post: “Save this for later.”
